Space building spare parts for food

A team of scientists is developing a plan to use 3D printing to build locally made houses and food on the Martian surface. These resources would support the lives of people leaving the confines of Earth for the Red Planet. To make things out of Martian raw materials, however, the first arrivals will need to bring some equipment. Once settlers put industrial cutters and 3D printers in place, subsequent visitors could start making a variety of objects needed for shelters, greenhouses and even parts for new 3D printers built on the Red Planet, said Bruce Mackenzie, founder of the Mars Foundation, an organization that aims to build and operate the first permanent settlement on Mars. Officials with the Mars Foundation hope to one day manufacture a Martian pipeline that can run, construct and even duplicate itself, using only local materials on Mars.

What’s the real cost of spare parts inventory?

Most organizations have a significant financial investment in spare parts maintenance, repair and operations MRO storeroom inventory. The remaining share of the inventory consists of critical spares and slow-moving, excess, or obsolete parts. Critical spare parts are items that have an excessively long order lead time, are one of a kind, or have an immediate effect on safety, the environment, or production. When a critical spare is put into service and the on-hand inventory level falls to zero, the risk factor rises very high.

If another equipment failure were to occur that required this part, your facility would be in trouble. An RCM program monitors equipment performance and, through vibration analysis, thermography, and other methods, identifies components that are approaching the end of their service life.

When these repairs are identified, the work can then be planned and scheduled and the critical spares reordered to eliminate or reduce the incidence of an inventory stockout and additional production downtime.

Slow-moving inventory items are parts that are used only once a year or maybe every other year. Regardless of the intention, these are parts that could be ordered on demand as needed and not stocked in inventory.

Excess inventory is much the same situation. Excess inventory in store-stocked items accumulates when the on-hand quantity has exceeded the maximum stocking level. These situations are repeated many times over in an environment where equipment reliability is low and production downtime is high. The first step in determining how much spare parts inventory you need to support the production equipment is to understand the expected demand for those parts.

Most decisions are made based on past inventory use. This method works well if you are just replenishing the existing inventory, but if you are monitoring inventory performance, this is a lagging indicator. If you are pursuing a lean MRO inventory program, you need to understand how many months or years of inventory you currently have and what your target goal or leading indicator is for your inventory investment. Because these are critical spares, it has been determined that the risk of not having these parts in inventory is very high.

An example of a supplier partnership program would be for high-dollar motors. The supplier needs to be reliable, and you need to be proactive in identifying motors that are approaching the end of their service life. Identify the high-use, low-dollar items that can be vendor-managed through point-of-use applications or vending machines.

Items that are specific to a given maintenance shop, such as fuses used only by the electricians, pipe fittings used by pipe fitters, and particular nuts and bolts, are candidates for vendor-managed inventories. Vending machines are good for supplying personal protective equipment PPE and other consumables, too. Both vendor-managed point-of-use programs and vending-machine applications provide a verifiable reduction in the total inventory investment. A structured work management program that proactively monitors equipment repair history and the MTBR for production equipment allows the repair work to be planned and scheduled.

Planning and scheduling maintenance work creates a partnership with the MRO storeroom and makes the stores operation less reactive to daily equipment failures that result from a reactive maintenance environment. If the maintenance planner can forecast the demand for parts three to six months out, many of the stocking levels can be reduced or revised to a nonstock item.

Defining the requirements for spare parts can be very challenging. An accurate equipment bill of material EBOM is essential to sourcing and having the correct parts for the needed equipment repairs. The maintenance planner uses the EBOM to request parts for preventive maintenance PM activities, corrective equipment repairs, and equipment modifications. Securing these parts ahead of time and verifying that the parts are correct ensures a maintenance technician can perform the work without delay.

A secondary benefit of kitting planned work is the option to reduce the spare parts inventory investment. Having the projected forecast allows the storeroom to order many of these parts when requested, reducing the need for storage space, investment in, and management of those parts. Modification of production equipment and changes in demand of production output can initiate the need to reduce or eliminate the stocking levels for some spare parts. Both of these situations are strategically beneficial to the business and to the storeroom.

This activity should happen with input from maintenance, the maintenance planner, purchasing, and the storeroom. The MRO inventory investment can be viewed as an asset or a liability. Adopting a strategic inventory management program provides the basis to better manage the inventory investment for your business.

You want to invest in critical parts and required inventory without tying up money in unnecessary parts. Partnerships with reliable suppliers can help you reduce your investment while ensuring the correct parts are available at the right price, at the right time, in the right place, and in the right quantity.

AM enables the fabrication of objects through the deposition of material in order to obtain fit-for-purpose hardware, as opposed to traditional subtractive processes, where material is removed from larger, semi-finished products. Like many new manufacturing processes, 3D printing arose from the merging of previously existing technologies, the coming together of Computer Aided Design CAD , inkjet nozzles and automated machine systems. AM includes a large family of processes and technologies and can be applied to a wide range of materials ranging from metals, polymers and ceramics but also food, living cells and organs. Plastic printing arrived first, initially used for rapid prototyping purposes, but metals and ceramics came soon after.

3D Printing on Mars Could Be Key for Martian Colony

Practical spare part management is the foundation for reliable plant operation and is crucial to a plant managers success. As plant manager, you need to know how to determine which spare parts are needed to make up an effective and comprehensive inventory system. Taking these factors into account can help minimize performance disruption, promote efficiency, and reduce carrying cost.

So to keep the shuttles flying, the space agency has begun trolling the Internet -- including Yahoo and eBay -- to find replacement parts for electronic gear that would strike a home computer user as primitive. Officials say the agency recently bought a load of outdated medical equipment so it could scavenge Intel chips -- a variant of those chips powered I. When the first shuttle roared into space that year, the played a critical role, at the heart of diagnostic equipment that made sure the shuttle's twin booster rockets were safe for blastoff. Today, more than two decades later, booster testing still uses chips, which are increasingly scarce. In the meantime, it is hoarding 's so that a failed one does not ground the nation's fleet of aging spaceships. Troves of old parts that NASA uncovers and buys, officials said, are used not in the shuttles themselves but in flotillas of servicing and support gear. Such equipment is found, and often repaired, at major shuttle contractors around the nation, as well as at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where the shuttles blast into orbit. That old computer in your basement? NASA is not interested.

Deep-space engineers at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Texas are putting together a prototype of a deep space station from scrap parts of the ISS. The Deep Space Habitat project is an attempt to work out optimum size of capsule, equipment and resources to send outside of the Earth-Moon system and into deep space. That could be to Mars, to an asteroid, or even to one of the solar system's many Lagrangian points. Other components like 3D printers and greenhouses for growing food are also under consideration. Initial concept missions for the structure to cope with cover a sixty-day jaunt into the inky blackness, and a much-longer -day variant. Craft to service the station are also being investigated. One of the most important considerations in the whole process is understanding how human factors will affect the mission. Making astronauts as comfortable as possible will significantly increase the chances of the mission being a success. Source: Wired. View Comments.
