How can the solution help you maintain complete visibility over your supply chain? Tracking material flows and transport equipment is a high priority for SAP customers who operate a network of plants and warehouses. For example, if you have a pre-assembly facility in Eastern Europe or Asia, you want to place orders there via your SAP system. When transporting goods by road or sea, you want to know whether goods will arrive on time or whether you need to reschedule final assembly at another plant.

At the receiver storage location, you want the goods receipt to be posted automatically with no effort. A digital goods tracking system provides a solution to these issues and automatically records any location changes in your SAP system. This automated process is triggered by the packaging process in production and in the warehouse.

Within the packing process a pallet barcode label is printed which documents the content as material, batches, handling unit, and quantities. In addition, a sensor is attached to the carton or pallet to track movement as it passes through gateways in the plant or during transportation. When goods pass through a gateway, the location change is transmitted to the SAP interface, automatically altering the status.

This is labeled as an event. Take, for example, the transfer from warehouse to production. This information is taken from the cloud application, which collects sensor data.

Together with our pilot technology partner we built the relevant event structures and content that are transferred to our solution. The solution uses active Bluetooth beacons in the form of five-by-five-inch cubes with a battery that provides energy for five years.

Bluetooth tags are inexpensive and can be used alongside other sensors such as for monitoring temperature — an important factor in transporting items like medicine and DNA.

Additionally, the solution can be extended using geo-fencing and can trigger alerts for predictive maintenance and servicing if it detects abnormal temperature changes. All data from sensors and Bluetooth tags is pushed into the cloud platforms. On the way to the shipment ramp or warehouse, the pallet passes a gateway about twice the size of a smartphone.

The tracking also records physical transport. A mobile gateway on the truck or on the container detects the Bluetooth tags on the pallets and sends a position report as often as required. Upon delivery, a goods receipt can be automatically created and recorded in the system. In the itelligence Logistics Bridge solution, event data is streamed in the cloud and data is written to the itelligence tenant of the SAP Cloud Platform for further processing.

Material tags and assets are managed in a digital twin. Companies use it to manage their fleet of trucks, the routing, and the telemetry data. Abnormal conditions as overheated are used to feed the critical data into SAP Blockchain. Overall, Logistics Bridge supports SAP customers with tracking goods locations to maintain a clearer overview and streamline their logistics and supply chain management.

Material handling

In the latter decades of the 20th century, the creation of new lean production methods set the standard for process improvement and created the framework for the Lean Manufacturing movement. By increasing value and reducing the amount of work required to perform tasks, many companies experienced a transformation that allowed them to significantly improve competitiveness within their industries. A core principle in lean methodology is the removal of waste within an operation. And in any business, one of the heaviest drains on profitability is waste. Lean waste can come in the form of time, material, and labor. But it may also be related to the utilization of skill-sets as well as poor planning. In lean manufacturing, waste is any expense or effort that is expended but which does not transform raw materials into an item the customer is willing to pay for.

The 28 member states are otherwise free to set their standard VAT rates. Some countries have variations on this, including a third, reduced VAT rate, which they had in place prior to their accession to the EU. Member states have now agreed that they will be free to set the reduced rates on most goods and services, including: e-books; domestic fuel; clothing; and female hygiene products. Material handling equipment MHE is mechanical equipment used for the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal.

Crude oil and other liquids produced from fossil fuels are refined into petroleum products that people use for many different purposes. Biofuels , such as ethanol and biodiesel, are also used as petroleum products, mainly in mixtures with gasoline and diesel fuel. Petroleum is the largest U. We use petroleum products to propel vehicles, to heat buildings, and to produce electricity. In the industrial sector, the petrochemical industry uses petroleum as a raw material a feedstock to make products such as plastics, polyurethane, solvents, and hundreds of other intermediate and end-user goods. In , U. The transportation sector accounts for the largest share of U.

Heavy machinery, especially Mining, Industrial or Farming Equipment, requires constant maintenance to keep it in good working order. Conversely, poorly maintained large machinery equipment runs inefficiently. Breakdowns are costly and safety is also an important consideration.

Material handling involves short-distance movement within the confines of a building or between a building and a transportation vehicle. Material handling is integral to the design of most production systems since the efficient flow of material between the activities of a production system is heavily dependent on the arrangement or layout of the activities. If two activities are adjacent to each other, then material might easily be handed from one activity to another. If activities are in sequence, a conveyor can move the material at low cost. If activities are separated, more expensive industrial trucks or overhead conveyors are required for transport. The high cost of using an industrial truck for material transport is due to both the labor costs of the operator and the negative impact on the performance of a production system e. A unit load is either a single unit of an item, or multiple units so arranged or restricted that they can be handled as a single unit and maintain their integrity. Although granular, liquid, and gaseous materials can be transported in bulk, they can also be contained into unit loads using bags, drums, and cylinders. Unit loads can be used both for in-process handling and for distribution receiving, storing, and shipping.

From civil infrastructure through to power plants and petrochemical facilities, clients This requires a partner with the combination of heavy transport equipment.

Gases in their compressed state, and particularly compressed air, are almost indispensable to modern industry, and are also used widely for medical purposes, for the manufacture of mineral waters, for underwater diving and in connection with motor vehicles. For purposes of the present article, compressed gases and air are defined as being those with a gauge pressure exceeding 1. Thus, consideration is not given to such cases as natural gas distribution, which is dealt with elsewhere in this Encyclopaedia. All the above gases present either an irritant, asphyxiant or highly toxic respiratory hazard and may also be flammable and an explosive when compressed. Most countries provide for a standard colour-coding system whereby different coloured bands or labels are applied to the gas cylinders to indicate the type of hazard to be expected. Particularly toxic gases, such as hydrogen cyanide, are also given special markings. All compressed gas containers are so constructed that they are safe for the purposes for which they are intended when first put into service. However, serious accidents may result from their misuse, abuse or mishandling, and the greatest care should be exercised in the handling, transport, storage and even in the disposal of such cylinders or containers. Depending on the characteristics of the gas, it may be introduced into the container or cylinder in liquid form or simply as a gas under high pressure.
