Representational textile collage, using hand dyed and commercial fabrics and thread, is the best way to describe my work. I use my own photographs and drawings as a starting point, but I use artistic freedom to pull together the important elements when selecting fabrics and placing them for the final design. Each piece represents a personal reflection of my unique perception of my environment. I am intrigued by color, value, line and pattern found in the world around me, both organic and man-made.

I work in series in order to go deeper into each subject, both literally and figuratively. I love recording what I see with my camera, as well as with pen, ink and watercolor. I carry a sketchbook with me at all times as I find it is the perfect way to record often forgotten details, as well as find the extraordinary in the mundane.

I grew up in a creative family and was taught many crafts as a young child. Over the years, I developed my innate sense of color and design with various mediums. I learned to sew at age 10 and have always had an affinity towards fabric and needle arts, making garments and gifts for my family and friends. After a hiatus, I returned to making traditional quilts in , and gradually moved into the textile art arena where I found true freedom of expression.

I am a believer that your bedroom and even your guest bedroom should be both a sanctuary and fabulous. Save the bed in a bag for a college dorm. Customizing your bedroom can be the easiest room to design. Think of things that make you feel cozy and comfortable. Your bed is the most personal and intimate place in your home. It is where you should feel comforted and safe. Some bedding terms are European and can get lost in translation.

Quilting is the process of sewing two or more layers of fabric together to make a thicker padded material, usually to create a quilt or quilted garment. Typically, quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material, but many different styles are adopted. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material to make a quilt. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire area where quilting is wanted. Quilting is done to create bed coverings, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can produce different effects depending on the chosen pattern s , such as a uniform effect across the material, or with dense quilting, can flatten one area so that another stands out.

Most quilters know Barbara Brackman is a foremost authority on quilts related to the Civil War and antebellum social causes. A quilt historian and researcher, she began the study of quilts made during and on behalf of the Civil War by women in America. She wrote two books about the quilts, women, and the War, in and respectively: " Quilts from the Civil War ," and " Civil War Women. In , two one-volume encyclopedias resulted, which have become the source for block pattern identification used by quilt historians everywhere. She begins by explaining the title of her book. She defines facts as historians use them, the limitations inherent in interpreting sources of information, and therefore the importance of finding multiple sources of information which state that indeed something occurred in a particular way. She takes the first few pages to talk about other historically inaccurate stories that have been taught as facts in history classes through the years. In this book, Barbara is sharing her fabrication of the symbolism she has attached to a series of 20 quilt blocks, associating them with slavery in the period of interest, mostly the late 18th to late 19th centuries. A timeline on page 10 highlights the important events in African-American slave history from to To know Barbara is to know she has a great sense of humor, which she brings into lectures and workshops. So with a tongue-in-cheek tone, she offers the reader a certificate of "Poetic License," which gives the quilt maker the right to add layers of symbolism to the elements in her own contemporary quilt in whatever ways she desires, as she makes it.
