Hemp textiles made in U.S. will take time, experts say
Industrial hemp contains only a tiny amount of the psychoactive component of cannabis. In fact, industrial hemp is the fashion equivalent of the boring sibling who wants to stay home every weekend and knit socks for fun. So basically, hemp is my ideal friend!
But can hemp redeem its image? Many think that it can. And the environmental benefits of hemp cultivation, combined with its durable characteristics as a fabric, have many hoping that it can feature in clothing that both feels and looks great, by even the highest of standards pun intended.
Hemp actually has a very long history of being used as a fibre, in fact, it has been cultivated for thousands of years and on almost every continent. The fabric has various natural advantages such as keeping you warm in winter, cool in summer and even protecting you from UV rays. The fibre produced from pure hemp is similar to linen in texture. It can also be blended with other natural fibres to create fabrics with the durability of hemp and the softness of cotton or bamboo.
But why all the fuss about the little green leaf? Is it really any different to other natural fibres? A densely growing plant, hemp literally chokes out any competing plants. Hemp also naturally reduces pests, so no pesticides are needed. Hemp also requires a relatively small amount of land to cultivate.
According to the Guide to Sustainable Textiles , this means it can produce up to double the fibre yield per hectare than cotton. So from an environmental perspective, the benefits of hemp are pretty clear.
But how does it compare once we start processing the raw product into a fabric? Hemp fabric is made from the long strands of fibre that make up the stalk of the plant. The various stages of this process can be done organically through a mechanical process that requires no chemicals. However, many companies now produce hemp fabric chemically, in a process that is much more intensive on the environment, but faster and cheaper to create. Once the fabric has been created, it may be dyed, which again can result in various environmental outcomes, depending on the technique used.
So the production phase is a bit less clear-cut. Although hemp is a sustainable crop to grow, we still need to be sure that the process being used to turn the plant into a fabric is low-impact. Producers have a responsibility to ensure their manufacturing process considers the environment, their workers and the consumers, along with profitability. The good news is that hemp constitutes a highly sustainable, low-impact crop that can be converted into fabric sustainably. Wondering where to start looking?

For thousands of years, cannabis has been grown and processed across the globe to produce high quality natural fiber full of applications for everyday life. In much the same way Lakota Sioux natives transformed the entire buffalo following a kill on the American Plains, industrious farmers of the old world were maximizing every part of the plant. The textiles that were created from cannabis hemp have traditionally ranged in quality from basic, homemade peasant clothing to high-end ceremonial garb worn by emperors and kings. Cultural use of the hemp fabrics was widespread across Asia, going as far back as ancient Chinese pottery and cloth circa BC. A gravesite discovered in far western China dated to CE reveals hemp fiber was also a durable resource for weaving sandals and shoes in the area. Whether as ritual wear or an everyday item, hemp has done it all.

Hemp 101: A Traditional Method of Hemp Textile Production
Amazing unused French hemp fabric. Hemp fabric is a type of textile that is made using fibers from the stalks of the Cannabis sativa plant. This plant has been recognized as a source of extraordinarily tensile and durable textile fibers for millennia, but the psychoactive qualities of Cannabis sativa have recently made it harder for farmers to produce this immensely beneficial crop. Over thousands of years, Cannabis sativa has been bred for two distinct purposes. On the one hand, many generations of cultivators of this plant have selectively bred it to be high in tetrahydrocannabinol THC and other psychoactive chemical constituents called cannabinoids. On the other hand, other cultivators have consistently bred Cannabis sativa to produce stronger and better fibers and have purposefully reduced the levels of psychoactive cannabinoids produced by their crops.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: Precision CDU 3000 - Product Overview - Cannabis & Hemp Commercial Distillation Unit
Hemp has serious potential to make the textile industry more sustainable. It requires little water and no pesticide, suppresses weeds and pathogens, and improves soil structure for other rotational crops. It poses a serious challenge to cotton which requires a number of fertilizers and pesticides , and synthetic fibers whose energy-intensive manufacturing processes leak toxic byproducts all along the supply chain.
